hi im trying to identify the exact model and year of my johnson 90 v4 twin but i cant seem to find a model number anywhere! have been told its on the shaft but cant see a thing! the boat its on is a 1991 model and would imagine the engine is about the same age. the only number i can see is under the cowling on an oval plate on the engine block which is R8616146 any ideas?

Look on the port side of the transom bracket and post what you find.

If you take the cowl off and look down at the top of the engine, see if there is a round, shiny nickel/quarter sized plate, if it is there, you should be able to cross reference the Jxxxxxxxx and come up with the model #, I think.

Re: johnson model no.?

I think that the "R" prefix means it is a factory rebuilt (or replacement) powerhead.

Re: johnson model no.?

That is probably a replacement powerhead number. Try posting some photographs of the cover and engine, etc, someone will probably be able to ID it for you.

The welch plug should be round, convex, nickel-sized, but not oval.
