I have a 1970 70HP Johnson. The question is the model no. It is 70ESL74M what does the M stand for at the end??? No one can seem to find out around and it's hard to find anything on pre 1974 motors around here. Thanks

Re: Johnson model number Question

The "M" is simply a model run number, Runner. It doesn't indicate anything about the specs of the engine.

Re: Johnson model number Question

Ok i didn't have a clue what all the letters were, what are the others (ESL) sorry to be such a pest but i guess if you don't ask questions you don't learn much. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks. :D

Re: Johnson model number Question

70 is the horsepower and 74 is the year. ESL = Electric Start Long (20" shaft).

See, your motors newer than you thought!

Re: Johnson model number Question

Guess it is, had to look at the title thought it was a 70 all the time thanks, by the way a guy told me it looked like my motor had a stinger setup on it, don't all 3cyl 70hp johnsons have 4 carbs on them or do some have 2?
