Re: Johnson model number

is that the only number, that looks like a serial number, we need the model number. I assume there is not tag on the stern bracket? What hp is the motor?

A pic of the cowl would definately help narrow it down.

Re: Johnson model number

Sometimes the pics are too big to post on this site, you will need to use a site like photobucket.com or the like to post your pics. Continue on this thread. There isnt another number on that frost plug eh?? THe quarter sized plug on the top rear of the motor?

Re: Johnson model number

These will be the model numbers for that era, 35 hp. It should be one of these if it is in fact a seventies motor.

35BA76 / 35BAL76 35 1976
35BA77 / 35BAL77 35 1977
35BA78 / 35BAL78 35 1978
35BA79 / 35BAL79 35 1979
35E76 / 35EL76 35 1976
35E77 / 35EL77 35 1977
35E78 / 35EL78 35 1978
35E79 / 35EL79 35 1979
35R76 / 35RL76 35 1976
35R77 / 35RL77 35 1977
35R78 / 35RL78 35 1978
35R79 / 35RL79 35 1979

Re: Johnson model number

nothing on the top rear.I found this #on a quarter sized metal plug located on the block behind the coils. sortof between coils and fuel filter.
Further investigation I found a faded Seahorse on cowl.On the air box is a sticker saying 1976 35HP spark advance 34 degrees.any help?

Re: Johnson model number

Well that narrows it down even farther to 1 of 3 model numbers.

35BA76 / 35BAL76 35 1976
35E76 / 35EL76 35 1976
35R76 / 35RL76 35 1976

Im not sure if the spark advance info will be enough to verify it. What will however is a little more info from you. The first model number is for AC lighting with rope start, the second model number is for electric start, and the third is for rope start, that should give you your model number. The numbers after the slash are for long models.

Re: Johnson model number

HighTrim it looks like you have solved my lifes biggest problem. The motor is electric start so it must be 35E76/35El76 351976. Correct?

Re: Johnson model number

yup, 1976 35 horse model number 35E76 . It is an 35EL76 if you have the long shaft. Youll have to measure it to find out. Now go buy some parts, lol !!:) Just needed a little detective work.

Re: Johnson model number

Further investigation into this motor.I found the rectifier is bad.No contunity between any 2 leads in any direction. While looking for parts I discovered this model/year had points.Mine does not.Looking at other model/year around the same year and size I found some with cdi which mine is.But the parts aren't the same. They show seperate stator and time base.My stator and trigger time base are one complete unit encased in resin.4 wires leave this unit and go to the powerpack and 4 go to the terminal plate to the rectifier.I cannot find any reference to this system. If I order a manual for a 35E76 I will get a manual showing points/condensor set up.Does anyone know what I have?

Re: Johnson model number

CDI came out on the 35 in 1977. I suspect you have either a '78 or '79, based on serial number info that I previously thought was faulty.

Thanks F R.Looking at BRP parts catalog both years look the same.Does it matter much which year manual I get? '78 or '79.

Re: Johnson model number

I'm not smart enough to know the exact differences between the two, but I'll bet they are minor. Compare the lower unit and ignition system parts and if they are the same, go with whichever one you find.
