Hey all- I have a 1989 225 johnson. Runs great, but not charging battery. When the enngine is running the battery is only putting out 12.07 amps?? A lot of people have said that it may be the rectifier but that means nothing to me and the manual is another language to me. Are there any simple troubleshooting techniques that any of you pros know about? Any Ideas? Thanks in advance!

As a half fast car mechanic, I can tell you that a 12 volt system should be kicking out 13 1/2 volt min ... but heres a heads up, is the voltage the same running and off? if you have a weak battery ... check all the connections and make sure they are clean and tight, sounds simple but the simple things are the ones that mess ya up the most. Rectifier bridges and all that malarkey is something best left to the motorheads out there, dont worry, there must be 10 thousand years of accumulated smudge pot experience posting on this channel, they will fix ya up!<br />Good Luck!

Hi Sutton....the manual should give you a run down on amps vs. rpms or so many amps at a certain rpm. Should tell you what you need to know. Just one other question, has your tach been acting up lately? Like swinging around or may or maynot work at times?? This usually points to a regulator/rectifier trying to fail.

Thanks guys- Yes OBJ, the tach has been jumping and now it only reads 1000 rpm when ignition is on! I am using a manual that covers a wide range of Johnsons. I believe it is 1979-1989?? and it has 50 to 225 hp?/ Is there a manual for just my year/make/and model?
