Johnson motor on Force controls?

I recently bought a little project boat with a blown1990 Force 90hp. I've been searching hard for another motor to replace it on somewhat of a budget. I've found a very clean '84 Johnson with low hours at a good price. My question is this...the boat I am putting the motor on obviously has the controls for the Force. Will the Johnson motor tie into these controls, or will I have to replace everything, shifter included? I am hesitant to replace the shifter for two reasons. The controls that come with the Johnson motor have the tilt/trim button integrated into the shifter. My tilt/trim toggle is currently by itself in my dash, and I would like to keep it there for cosmetic reasons. The same with replacing the shifter...the boat's current shifter is just better looking. Any advice? Thanks guys!

Re: Johnson motor on Force controls?

Hi JBam! From everything that I know (which is not as much as many on this board), the controls will not be compatible. I currently have both a Johnson and a Force on separate boats and the set up is completely different...but then the Johnson is only a 9.9 and the Force an 85.

Yes you can use the same controls. The shifter controls will need the adapter for the cables. These are dependant on the manufacture of the cables (teleflex). As to the wiring harness you might have to cut into them and wire them together. But they should work. You will need both factory service manuals to figure out what wire is which.

I plan on doing this with my 1991 120hp force wiring and morse/teleflex controls to a 1987 200hp Evinrude. Still have not done it and might need to add a wire here or there. But it can/will be done. Don't really have a choice. The Evinrude harness is way too short and the force has the wrong end/connector on it. Will just cut into it and but connect the approriate wires together. There will deffinately be some solding and marine heat shrink also.

The other option is just using the johnson harness and cutting off the plugs and wiring into you existing controls.

If it were mine, I'd absolutely swap the shifter.
