Thanks everyone for the great feedback (see topic on repower options).

For me the remaining question is did OMC/Johnson make a better engine in 1991 or 1997? The guy who will sell me either a just rebuilt 1991 150 HP for $3,500 or a just rebuilt 1997 175 HP for $4,500 feels that the 1991 engine is more solid & a better deal.

He will sell me either engine. His gripe about the late 1990's Johnson's are 1) their fuel & oil injection both stink (he will not warrantte VRO [he wants me to manuualy premix) and 2) Johnson started making engines that would break down after 6 or 7 years so that the user would have to buy a new engine. In fact, he says that the 1997 engine that i am interested in blew its powerhead because the VRO stopped working properly.

What's your opinion?

Peter...I agree with JB...probably one if not the best 150hp outboard motors ever made...likely every bit as powerful as the later 175hp motor you are considering...just my opinion

In my own simple minded thinking wouldn't things like the carb's, pump's, and starter probably be in better shape from a 1997 engine?

Re: Johnson Motor Options

Depends on hours and motor upkeep .Do visual on both under the cowl, lower unit condtion.Scrap the vro and pre-mix assuming either one you consider is still running vro. theres a replacement vro pump available that is suppose to have some of the bugs worked out ,but safer bet to pre-mix.
