I have a 93 johnson VJ50TLETB, its a two cylinder. The other day i took it out and it ran fine, went to put it back on the trailer the next day and it almost started twice, but then lost spark, I know its getting fuel (wet plugs) I tested all the ignition components except the power pack, as I cant crank the motor from ten feet away and read the voltimeter, I need a set of clips. I think I did it right but I cant get a voltage reading from the timer base when cranking it, it's supposed to be at .5volts, I get absolutly nothing when i crank it. The ohm test on the stator was in range, but the ohm test on the timer base was way high, its supposed to be 15ohms +/- 2 for the 12 volt system, Mine is reading upwards of 26 ohms. Its a CDI timer base and I've had headaches with that company before selling crap components, I dont think I'll be able to get a power pack reading if the timer base is the prob. I have the factory shop manual, but it only mentions about the parts 'being in range' is a high 'out of range' ohm reading indicative of a bad part? I'm concerned that I didn't get a good grounding on the volt test, but if the high ohm range explains it then I wouldn't be so worried that I got it wrong. Does anyone have any worthwhile advice?

do you have an emergency kill lanyard, check it. unplug the big red plug, wiring harness, then jump the solenoid, this takes the controls out of the situation. you will have turn the handle on the primer to flood the motor if it starts.

yeah I read about that, but I couldnt get clarification on it. is it the wire with the inline fuse? there's another red wire running out of the harness but i didnt check it today as I'd have to cut the wire and reconnect it with another splice which i dont have. Any thought on the timer base ohm reading? Ohh OK, you meant unplug the harness altogether... In the shop manual it talked about unhooking the wire that was specifically for the killswitch. But unplugging the entire harness might save me a wire splice. How is that jumping performed? are there two main prongs on the plug that just simply need to be grounded and touched to the + to crank it?

i use a remote starter switch. on the solenoid i connect to the incoming postive battery cable, and the top, small terminal. this is what activates the solenoid, to send power to the starter. it is the safest way to jump, and the switch is quite handy when working on the motor. auto parts store wil have a remote switch http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009XQUKW
