Johnson O/B shifting problems

I have a 1990 Johnson O/B 120hp VRO. The engine runs great but just recently started have a problem with the gears. I shift engine out of fwd or rev into neutral and then shut off. Sometimes when I start engine again it is in gear eventhough the shift is locked in neutral. I'm not even sure how the engine starts with the boat already in gear. I need to jiggle the shifter alot to get it into neutral. Is the problem linkage, the cable or the lower unit? Thanks.

Most likely its a cable adjustment, but it could be a shift rod adjustment too. Has the gearcase been removed lately for any type of service? Are you going to attempt adjustment yourself, or are you going to take it in?<br /><br />-John

It was just brought in for service to replace the steering cable, but they had to take the engine off the boat to install it. I was going to make the repair myself but if you think the settings were moved when they took off the engine, I will bring it back and make them adjust it. Thanks
