Hello, I am in the process of getting a new Lund 16' Alaskan Tiller for fishing I'm torn between what motor to buy, but it must be a 25hp four-stroke. Johnson, Honda are choices. Any comment or experiences with these motors would be appreciated. Thanks, Wally

Both are fine Motors, although I'm partial to Johnson. Suzuki makes the Johnson four strokes and most, but not all, Johnson dealers will honor warranty work. I guess it just depends on if there is a dealer nearby that will give you good service. Check out the dealers and anyone who has dealt with them for their take on them. Either one is a good choice in my opinion! Is there any significant brand that is run in your neck of the woods? Talk to folks at the ramps. They generally will give you the good and bad aspects of engines and especially, the dealer they use.

The major difference in these two outboards is weight. The Johnson (Suzuki) will be over 50 lbs heavier. That's a lot for a 25 hp on a 16' Lund.

Keep in mind that the Suzuki does have a little more displacement. Plus it comes standard with power trim and tilt, the Honda doesn't.

IMO, it would all depend on the T&T and price.

I have experience with Honda BF 20 (short shaft, manual start, tiller handle). It's pretty new on the market (from fall 2002 I think).
Engine has just 45 kg (99.2 pounds), which is less then comparatively two stroke Mercury 20 (52 kg = 114.64 pounds). No smoke, no vibration and very low noise. With my Quicksilver Heavy Duty 380 inflatable, I can reach 25 miles, and engine needs just 3 to 5 liter in hour (0.79 to 1.32 gallons). Since I bought this outboard this summer, I've made just around 70 working hours, but anyway I am very satisfy, and I think I didn't make a mistake.
On the other hand, Honda BF 25 is on the market around 10 years, and this engine is perfectly choice for those who wants robust and very durably and reliable engine, perfect for fishing with very low speed whole day. If you don't have a problem with engine weight, it would be a good choice, while this engine was proved as one of the most reliable outboards on the market today.
I can' tell whether Johnson is good choice or not, but I would rather buy Honda.
Honda BF 30 would be a good choice (the same engine as BF 25) also.

I would like to thank all who replied to my inquiry. I think the Johnson is going to be the winner with all things considered. It certainly is BIG!! It will be my first four-stroke motor. Again, thank you all and good fishing...Wally
