Hi, We have a Johnson 90 horsepower v4 model J90TLCCA ? Not sure of the year. Someone said '88 or '89. The motor cranks great. Runs smooth until you demand more power. Then it shutters for a little bit and smooths out again. We have cleaned the carbs and ran some cleaner through it. Changed plugs a few times. Any ideas? Oh, yeah, how can we be sure what year the motor is? I've posted before but I crashed and lost the info. Thanks for any help. Sherrie

Hi, Sherrie.

Your engine is a 1988 model.

Delays in response can be caused by the ignition failing to advance promptly when the throttles are opened.

Check stator movement and response to throttle advance.

You might also do a "link 'n' synch" adjustment procedure to be sure that the carbs and the stator are correctly synchronized.

Good luck. :)

Sherrie,

Post your model and serial numbers. Those can be found on the bracket that clamps the engine to the boat.

JB's advice is sound. Also make sure your fuel suystem lines are intact and connections are good.

I'll be back as soon as I can with the SN# and the name of the plugs. Thanks so much for your quick responses. The weather is a little unstable here tonight, so it will be tomorrow before I can check. Goodnight and thanks again. Sherrie

Sherrie,

I have a similar issue with my 96 90Hp. I noticed it more when I was pulling a skier. From dead slow in forward, I would push the throttle forward in a smooth and gradual motion, just before the boat starts to plain I feel a little vibration and shutter for a second or two then smooth running.

I know I’m not being any help here but was wondering if it was more a “that’s how they run issue” than any thing else?

I have only owned this boat for a couple of months and only had it in the water twice.
