Johnson outboard air cleaner?

My son has just bought a second-hand boat with a Johnson 25hp outboard. This is our first boat and looking at the engine I noticed the carburetor did not have any air filtration at all - you can see straight into the throat. Is this normal? Wouldn't the carb suck in the old deteriorating bits of foam that line the inside of the engine cover?

Tim....some had a cover some did not. Post the year or model number and one of the fine gents here can tell ya' if there was one.<br /><br />Thanks.

OBJ is correct, especially if it's an older model it will not have an air silencer, They do not have "filters" per say, just maybe a cover that cuts down on the intake noise. My 1989 Johnson 28 HP does not have one either. I would not be concerned about it...

There probably was no filter or cover on the carb. However, if the sound deadening foam liner is deteriorating it should be removed or replaced because the stuff has been known to clog carb jets and orifices.

Thanks everyone. I don't think I will worry about it. By the way, I have no idea what the model number is as I can't find it anywher on the engine. I've found the serial number? (A8420196) and plenty of other 6 digit numbers (e.g. 326713 or 319709) but I think they must be part numbers. Very frustrating!
