Johnson Outboard - New to Boating Prop Question

Hello,

I am wanting to get a new prop for my boat. I have only owned the boat for about 2 months and got it out into the water 1 time.

1) Performance issue you are trying to correct. I would like to know what would be a good starting place so that I can best pull skiers
2) Current prop manufacturer, model, aluminum or stainless as a minimum. Unsure about the Manufacture or model, but it is aluminum.
3) Current prop diameter and pitch (required). Stamped on the side is 13-3/4 x 15
4) Wide open throttle RPM and speed with an average load (very helpful) Unfortunately the tach is broken. It seems to run 30-35MPH
5) Engine/drive make, model, year, and HP Johnson, 1975, 85HP Outboard
6) Boat make model, year, length and weight Ozark, T-164, 1973, 16ft and not sure about the weight

I am really looking for a good starting place for pulling skiers. I figure that if I can get that accomplished that I should be able to do pretty much anything else I need with the boat.

Thanks in advance.

OK you did pretty good.Unfortunately for any prop change you need a working tach
both for the best performance and the health of your motor.
While waiting for a tach Check your setup. The antivent plate(just above the prop)
should be even with or slightly above the bottom.be sure the motor is in excellent tune and the throttle opens all the way.Your boat is 1,000 lbs dry weight.Would be good to know yoour total load.Don't forget the motor and fuel.I would start with your present prop and see how it does.Trim down for hole shot.We will need to know your wot rpm and speed lightly loaded.
A gps for speed would be good.

Excellent! thanks for the info. I guess this is a topic best left until spring, but that's cool. I will work on the getting the tach working and do some more test runs.

Thanks again Steelespike

Re: Johnson Outboard - New to Boating Prop Question

Well it is Springtime and I am trying to get the tachometer going. I found out why it is not working...since the wire behind the tach itself is just coiled up behind the gauge and not connected to anything

Could anyone help find where does the Tach get connected to on the motor?
