Johnson Outboard Problems, Please help!

I have a 1979 Johnson outboard that I use on a 16 ft. duck hunting boat. Lately when I take it out it will only run just over idle speed. If I try to go any faster then it seems to loose thrust. The RPM's and speed of the engine increases but the boat actually slows down. Any help would be appreciated.

That's a classic example of a slipping hub in the propeller

So how could I go about correcting this problem?

Take off the propeller nut, slide off the propeller and change the broken pin. If the pin is okay, could be the gears!

I took off the prop, slid out the gear inside of it and didn't see any pin. Could it be a weight issue or the wrong prop for the load in the boat? The reason that I ask is that the only thing that I have changed is the ammount of weight in the boat?

What year and size is the motor?

F R nailed it for you. The prop is fastened to the hub by a rubber bushing. When this slips you need to get the bushing replaced. This is called getting the prop rehubbed. It will cost less than a new prop and the shop will take care of any dings to the blades. Take it to any propeller shop or marine service shop and they will send it out. This is not something that you can fix yourself. The alternative is to buy a new one.

Only problem here with your reply is that there is no "PIN", and it aint the "gears"...

Jezz........yep, get the prop rehubbed

I'm on Pwoller's boat crew, and we're gonna take that prop in to get it rehubbed.

One other problem with the motor that I don't think he's asked about is what looks like oil leaking down the side toward the prop. This just an old leaky motor, or could we do something about that too? We thought maybe we just had too much oil in the gas mix and it was spitting some of the thick mix out, but we aren't really sure.

Re: Johnson Outboard Problems, Please help!

It is most likely exhaust residue but if it is leaking out
somewhere other than the exhuast outlet or the little drain holes in the leg near the gearcase then you may have a leaky/loose gasket or screw.Leaky screw or gasket probably not a problem just messy.

Re: Johnson Outboard Problems, Please help!

Thanks. We went out hunting today and checked it afterward. It seems to be leaking out from somewhere right around the top spark plug. When we have time, we'll look into it a little more, but for now, we're feeling a little better about it. It's not really leaking that much anyway. And we got that prop rehubbed and it seems to be working perfectly now.

Thanks so much for all yoru help!
