Hello,
I was wondering what the difference is between the 90 and 115. The info I gathered for a 2002/3 Johnson looks identical between the 2, including the gearing.

Is their a particular model year I should stay away from?

Thanks d:)

Re: Johnson Outboard

If you look at the specs for engines from all manufacturers you will find there are two, three and even four engines of the same displacement but with different horsepower ratings. The differences can be carburetion, porting, exhauting tuning, timing, etc to name just a few things. You don't see these items in the specs because they are difficult to specify and most people wouldn't understand the purpose anyway. If you need 115 HP, buy all means buy 115 HP. You can throttle down a little if you have a little too much power. You can't throttle up if you have too little power. Besides, a big engine loafing will be slightly more economical than a smaller engine working at wide open throttle all the time.

Re: Johnson Outboard

ok, but do younknow what make the difference between these two Johnsons? Someone told me that there is no way to discern the difference from just looking at them. I may be making a purchase and I want to know what to look for.
My boat is rated for a max of 90 hp. With the Johnson 90 being the same in wieght and all the specs on the sheet, why not just go with a 115? If the 90 sticker should happen to be on the cover for insurance purposes?

Thanks

Re: Johnson Outboard

they are going to want the model and serial number, for insurance. guess what it will immediately tell them it's a 115. and no insurance.

Re: Johnson Outboard

What Silvertip says is correct Bent Creek. The differences are in the bowels of the engines and the 90 cannot be made into a 115 for the difference in price.
