I have a 1997 johnson outboard. 35 hp I just bought it . It seems like after I run it I have dark or black oil like coming out from behind the prop. I have only ran it a total of 20 minutes in driveway.

Aloha, Hunter.

No worries. That is normal combustion residue.

Re: johnson outboard

Is it lower unit oil? or an unburned gas situation?

Re: johnson outboard

JB please lend me your expertise. I was always told that the sluge was buildup on the motor mounts and that it was not good at all. In fact it can lead to pulling your engine apart and cleaning the engine mounts was the chap who told me this wrong? I know its unburnt combustion, but can it in fact eat away at the motor mounts

Re: johnson outboard

Recordhunter
I agree with JB this is normal. This is unburned 2 cycle oil TCW-3 mixed with exhaust. My outboard does the same thing. Worse if do a lot of trolling or running in cold water. All you can do is make sure your fuel mix is 50 to 1. Have fun and do not worry.

Re: johnson outboard

My Merc 50hp does the very same thing, Once in a while i lean on the 2 stoke oil (as its mixed in the gas tank) and take it out for 40mins for a blast.. Works most of the time.

Or the other thing i do is leave the mix as 50-1 and give her a blast before i moor up.

Stuart
