Does anyone, besides me, think that this outboard motor forum should be divided up a little. Seperate questions by motor type. Johnsons and Rudes, Mercs, Force and Chrysler, General motor questions. If I had any help or information to offer to someone, it would only be related to Johnson and Rudes and general outboard.

This forum seems to be busy enough that further division would be much easier to keep up with.

I hope iboats will consider it.

Re: Johnson Outboards and Forum Seperation

The problem I see is that many or most of the trouble shooting techniques and repair procedures are common to all outboards. Electrical, fuel, or prop problems are universal. Just think of all the general info you would miss out on if you only saw the brand specific topics. Also, there would be even more duplicate posts than there already are.

What would really be nice is that new members would be required to demonstrate that they know how to use the search function, before they are allowed to start a new topic.

Ditto Roscoe.

I also think that too many different fora would dilute the new member's opportunity to learn.

"As is" offers a great wealth of info without having to parse details from different manufacturers topics.

An impeller is an impeller; throttle linkage differs within a mfg line as do carbs, ignition sytems etc.
Steering Cables?

Often times, once at work and after the initial insanity, I'll read this first page.
Don't think I'd have the time or motivation to read a page of: Rude, Merc, Yammy, Suzi, Force, Tihatsu, Elgin, Sea Ray, Western Auto, Briggs, Scott Atwater, etc, etc and any others I have missed.

I like it under the present configuration.
Informative, enlightning, entertaining and easy.

I agree, but rather than split up by motor brand, perhaps by component or problem area...

examples:
A- Sealing Issues (Water Leaks, Oil Leaks)

B- Starting Issues (won't turn over, or no spark/fuel)

C- Poor performance Issues (perhaps broken into say three sections... idle, light, and heavy loads)

D- Certianly questions about "what year/model/etc... is my X-Y-Z?, could be put into one group, or better yet, have the information or manuals that repeatedly get referenced here as sources, more readily available, so those that want that info aren't wasting everyone elses time without first doing a little research on thier own.

E- There are a number of other groups that could be broken out (gear box, charging system, etc...), but these are just some thought starters...

Bottom line?... Set it up like a service manual, by component areas or groups of related components.

Just my $0.02 ... ob1jeeper...

It was just a thought.

I just can't keep up with this forum. Too many posts. One more level of division would help me anyway.

I guess I am selfish, I only want to see what I know about. Johnson and Rudes.

Another neat feature they have on another website I look at--When I open the site, I can hit a button and just see the posts since I last logged in.

If noone asks for something different, nothing ever changes.

Howdy folks !
if you dont mind a view from a newbie- this forum works very well as is. I've only made one post and received one reply, but that helped me to get started in the right direction(thanx OutboardJim)
I read and search this sight every night looking for info and have yet to be disappointed.
if it aint broke- dont fix it. the search option is the magic key and you folks are great at helping with comments. dont get me wrong, i'm all for change if it's good and looking from here things work pretty good now.
Thanks skid

I too like the johnnyrudes best, but I have learned a lot from posts of other brands too. I´d suggest to leave things as they are.

Re: Johnson Outboards and Forum Seperation

I would like to keep it together, as much of the issues can also apply to other brands.

However, I think it would help if there a split-out for "What year/horsepower is my engine?" questions, which seem very common. Maybe our admins could get reference materials from other sites, or at least have their links available.

If folks know for certain what they have, then they have no excuse not to include that data in their problem descriptions.
