Check for an id tag on the bracket that attaches the motor to the transom of a boat. On the engine block itself there is a plug near the fuel pump (lower left of the pump) that will have the model # on it.
Drain the oil from the lower unit by removing the lower drain plug and then remove the upper vent plug to drain. Fill oil by injecting in lower drain till it reaches the upper vent plug. Install upper vent plug, remove oil filler and install lower drain plug.

If the model number is RDS-23.
That would make it a 1961 Johnson 40 hp
Fuel/oil mix is 24:1

RDSL-23 is a 1961 40 hp model

When you drain the oil from the gear -case be sure you identify the correct two screws. Broad headed, slotted and identical ( the drain screw is on the very bottom I believe)
DO NOT undo the other smaller screw ( (Philips head probably) in the side of the lower half of the gear case. It holds some of the gear shift mechanism in place!

Fit new seals to the drain and level screws!

See the gear case diagram in the PARTS CATALOG (pages 18 and 19)

The correct fuel mix for a 1961 model is 24:1

That's 1 quart of oil in 6 galls. ( TCW3 2stroke outboard engine oil and regular unleaded gasoline)

More precisely, 5.33 fluid ounces oil per US gallon

Before you try operating it read http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158086

Re: Johnson Outboards : Sea Horse

I think I may be resurrecting an old thread here, but I hate starting new ones!

I received a 3 HP Johnson Sea horse--I think it's either a 1957-58, model # JW-13. The lady who gave it to me said that it works, and it appears to be in near-mint condition, but I haven't tested it out yet because it's a little cold here right now!
I don't know whether it's worth it to keep it and try to get it running or sell it, I don't even know if I'd have a use for a 3 HP. Thing is, I have no idea how much a motor like this would sell for. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It's okay BamaGirl. Welcome to iboats. :D

That motor is infact a '57 model 3hp. If it is in near mint condition, then someone here would be willing to buy it. It's an iboats favorite and those are great little motors. Myself, like others here had/have a few of those models.

Mix the fuel ratio at 16:1 on that model. That is 8 oz. per gallon. Spark plug should be a J6C.

Thanks for the response! I am going to try to open it up this weekend and see how everything looks. Thank you for the ratio advice...that was going to be my next question :)

I will let you know how it goes. I may have more questions once I see what's going on with it.
