140 Johnson V-4 1985 j140txco year end production(with some 1986 parts; namely the plastic thermostat) salt water use-all info is standing behind engine looking forward-
After approximately one hour operation, engine stopped pumping water out of the tell tale; engine shut down by me before overheat alarm went off-opened cowl and engine was too hot to touch. Went home on other engine and hooked up hose-started up but no tell tale. However-water was coming out from the exhaust-shut down after 30-45 seconds. Opened up the thermostats after cooloing down. One on the left was fine, no impeller debris-but notice salt in the outlet line leading to the right side head which was then cleaned. Right thermostat was hard to remove and when I did it was "swollen" and distorted. Replaced thermostat and now seems to work fine. Ran for 15 minutes on muffs-only warm to the touch. To be safe blew compressed air back through tell tale to see if anything else was blocked. Now my questions:
Am I done? If not what else should I be alert for? Should the water pump be okay (its 30 hours old) or does that need to be replaced? This seems to be too simple a solution to what the problem was. Any thoughts? Thanks for replies.

Sounds to me like ya' done good Tony. Just be aware if one t-stat went bad the other could go also. I would have replaced both. I hope yer flushing out with fresh water after the salt. Don't think the impeller will give ya' any trouble.

Hello
if the t-stats are the original white ones with the *** that went into the seats then get rid of them post haste and change to the new black ones and the new one piece seats.
if the seats are deformed the t-stats wont work properly
Good luck and keep posting

I used the black one with a rubber gasket into which the thermostat was screwed. Is this okay or is it the gasket to which you refer? Thanks. BTW all the info needed for this repair was learned on this forum. While I don't post much,(because I'm a novice to this) I lurk quite a bit.Does that Salt Away stuff work or is that just snake oil?
