Hi, i have just got a pair of matching johnson 8hp engines, both 1995 models. They have been stored for a few years as for what ever reason the previous owner must have come across a problem and took them out of service. After replacing obvious parts to get them going again, both of them start Ok and run OK, water seems to floods out of the water tube OK for a while but then the water starts to get too warm to hold my hand under the flow and then starts to spit and steam. I have removed the thermostats. Can anyone shed any light on the possible cause please?

impellr is the first place to start.those small impellers go bad,ESPECIALLY SITTING for long periods

As the water was running quite freely i didn't suspect the impellor but if that may be it i shall do so? The parts i replaced were things like leads etc.

Re: johnson overheating

any motor that has been sitting or has not been service in the last year or so should have at LEAST a new impeller and the gear case oil changed...the carbs also will probably need to be cleaned well and pay close attention to the needle valve.

Thanks to you all, I turned out the water but to inspect it and it had some debris semi blocking the fine gauze covering the water pick up by the prop!
