Hi guys,

I have a 2004 J40plsrs 40hp Johnson outboard that needs a new trim motor.
i pulled out the old one and it has a slot drive.

I ordered a new trim motor and it arrived but it has a hex drive.
OEM Parts
the above is the parts diagram for my engine and number 39 is the trim pump. 0437801 is the part number.

But the 0437801 does not come with a slotted drive only the hex drive. Does any one have any suggestions?

heres a pic of the one I got in;

DB Electrical - NEW TILT/TRIM MOTOR EVINRUDE JOHNSON OMC 435532, 437801

any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Did one of these the other day. Where is the drive pin from your old model? If it is a slotted key that goes into the pump then you need to get a pin that has a hex on one side and the slot on the other. The one I did had exactly the same pump with a hex drive as the original. I work for a BRP dealer so I always order from the engine model number from original BRP parts lookup.

two things -
first,
Don't expect your aftermarket replacement to be as good as the original. Evinrude did a great job designing the original motor. Using an inverted bell for the magnet frame was genius. In one simple move they eliminated two gaskets and one cable grommet from the durability equation. I am surprised other trim companies have not noticed and copied it. The evinrude is such a good design that I would be hard pressed to choose between a 15 year old original or a new chinese. It is perhaps the best trim motor design ever. It takes the engineering gold crown away from 1988-1992 Force/prestolite for their inexpensive yet 20-25year durable product.

second, the driveshaft is a separate part. Yours is probably in the bottom of the reservoir. It usually falls into the gap between cylinder and gearcase. It can be difficult to see due to oil. Try a clean magnet. it is the only loose part made from steel. Do your best not to let water or debris into the fluid. both have bad results.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I don't think there is room for a drive pin?

ah,
i have never been able to exactly locate the parts diagram for your system. See how your check valve covers are a large hex shape instead of slotted? The internals on your system will not match up to the parts diagrams I have been able to find.

The piston assembly is same but the gearbox and check valves are different. I have one of those out in the shop. It's in the orphans and widows bin. I'll pull the pump tomm. and see if there is anything that can be done so that you can use a standard motor and driveshaft.
