Johnson power trim

I just put a new seal in the power trim cap. It was leaking from there prior. I reassembled the piston assembly and rod and then put it back in the cylinder and screwed the cap back on. I made sure the piston rod was fully extended and then filled with as much fluid as it would hold through the fill hole. I worked it up and down a few times (no problems other than being a bit jerky) and now it is stuck in the up position. The relays were replaced and are good, so it's not them. It's almost as if there is a sort of vacuum on the piston keeping it from going down. Is this possible? Any ideas how to get it to work again?

By there if it matters, it is a 1992 model #j40ttelnj 40 hp.

Are you sure the "trailer lock" didn't get deployed??

If not, BRACE the engine up and loosen the manual bleed on the trim pump. That will let any excessive air out.

No, it's resting on the trailer lock now to hold it up, but it was off while raising it up and down.

Pardon the ignorance, but where is the manual bleed?

Look for a hole on the the left side (looking from behind) of the engine bracket.

Deep inset, you will see a standard (blade) screw. That is the bleed for manual tilt and release.

MAKE SURE THE ENGINE IS BRACED-UP.
