Hi guys i wonder if anyone can give me some advice, i have a johnson 35hp which i believe was 1984 build, my question is, the propeller seems loose, (whole thing moves about 1/2 ") by pulling and pushing this, I presume this is NOT normal, so how would i repair, i dont want to take apart at the min as i haven`t got a clue .

Cheers

Re: Johnson prop 35hp Question

Have been away from OMC for awhile. When you say 1/2" you need to be accurate and say where it is you measure your 1/2"..There is normal play fore and aft and if on the shear pin with a smooth prop shaft, rather than a splined shaft there will be some play in the prop to shear pin to pin retaining nut.

Help any?

How i can see it is that i can see the prob is held in my a nut and cotterpin and looks like a washer then there is movement there, would not tightning the nut up stop this as there seems more thread to tighten ?

Need pics to tell more detail. Slop is normal, rubber hub picks up the kick on shifting, no biggie millions out there running like that and have been for eons of time.

Wow, I would say that's too much play. Is your thrust washer missing?

Re: Johnson prop 35hp Question

NOOOOOOO! Not that much. Pull your prop off and see if your prop shaft is moving that far. If so, you have lower unit problems. Otherwise you have prop problems....but in short sir, sorry to say but you have a definite problem......again the old axiom holds true: Pic is worth a thousand words.

Re: Johnson prop 35hp Question

pull the prop and see what is going on. The prop shaft is not moving.
you could not have run the motor with that set up.
You are missing a thrust washer, Or something. Not a Johnson guru. but that ain't right.

Re: Johnson prop 35hp Question

Prop shaft does not look like it is moving in the video.

A thrust washer would prevent the prop from making contact with gearcase. It would look like a very thick washer with splines cuts in center hole, and would come off after prop is removed. You may have other prop hardware missing, or an extremely loose prop.
