hello all, recently replaced the impeller in a new to me 1963 johnson qd-24cleaned and adj carb.the motor performs excellent, despite only 70 psi on each cyl.my dilemna is that there are numerous white oil globules beneath the motor floating in the water column behind the transom. i am running 24 to 1 fuel/oil mixture and it does not seem to be from unspent fuel, but from the lower unit somehow. i did not do any work on the lu seals. can this unit be split and o rings replaced without any special tooling? and do you think this might keep me from polluting my favorite lake? thanks for your input! i did rpl lu oil and use new gaskets on the screws.

there is only one way to make sure the lower is not having water intrusion, and that is to remove the bottom plug, and see if water comes out first. motor has to sit atleast one day, before you do this.

but actually, these motors do not burn all the fuel an oil. it builds up in the exhaust housing. and exits with the exhaust. if you want the motor to burn cleaner, i suggest doing a decarb, which is like an exlax for you motor, and gets the crud out. it also has been known to clean up rings, and increase your compression.

Decarb, take a can of seafoam put 3/4 of it in the gas tank, with only 1 gallon of premixed gas. put the rest in a spray bottle. start the engine, and let it come up to temperature. then remove plugs, and them some real good shot of seafoam into the cylinders, replace plugs, let sit 15 minutes. restart, and spray the rest of the seafoam into the carbs, so the the motor almost stalls, wait and repeat until the seafoam is gone.then take for a wide open spin. then put in new plugs, ad premixed gas to the tank, and take it for a wide open throttle spin. it is going to smoke like a house on fire, during this process.

Unburned oil, emusified with cold water can create those globlets. A lot also depends on the type of oil you are using and the load/speed of the motor. "Good" oil that does not break down under heat and stress goes right thru the motor, more or less.

In other words, check the lower unit oil and if it is full of oil and not water, ignore the floating oil.

May I add....my motor does it too, under certain conditions. I use 100% synthetic TC-W3 outboard oil that is claimed to be bio-degradeable so I don't have to worry about being a polluter.

thank you both for your insight and instructions. I will perform a decarb and recheck the lwr unit for water intrusion. The synthetic tcw-3 is something i will try as well. thanks again!
