ihave a 1960 super sea hores 40 hp johnson rds 22 well the compression release valve one is not sealing it keeps blowning out the compression release valve dome gasket and water was comming out of the dome joe revees told me to pull the head and take the valves out well i did and the top valve that was blowing the gasket was a little hard to get out like it was stuck well when i got it out the little black o ring that is near the head of the valve was gone i guess it burnt off if i cant find a new valve can i seal them closed so they dont open at all with jb weld or a real weld because i might not find any some of the parts i have been told by a boat deal that some of the parts are no longer avalible and the water was comming out because the valve leaking burnt a hole in the head cover gasket im asking because the valve is mostly only to pull start easyer but if i cant get valves i dont know what to do if any one can help head gasket and head cover gaskets togeather cost about 50.00 so i dont really want to change every year i just put one on last summer now i have to get new one before i put the head back on :confused: :confused: :confused: :confused: :confused:

Another option for you is to get a head without the compression relief valves and install that. Twin city outboard (tcoutboard.com) will have a bunch of them. By eliminating the valves, you will solve your problem permanently. The heads from several years of 40hp Johnnyrudes after 1960 will fit.

I have a pair of those valve's. Let me know if you want them. They are un-used. You can have them for free, Have'nt had a whole lot of call for them.

Iboats Head gasket 18-2957 ($14), they don't have the cover gasket but that lists for about $6 (307762).<br />Easiest thing to do is to get a head w/o compression relief like CATransplant suggested, especially if you're using the electric start anyway. JB weld will not work for sealing ignition gasses.
