Hi, D.<br /><br />You will need the diagrams and instructions from a Johnson Service Manual, safety glasses and heavy gloves to tackle that recoil starter. <br /><br />It is possible to replace the rope without dismantling the starter, but only if you know exactly what you are doing. If the spring gets loose without following the book, you will think you have been attacked by a sharp, spring steel monster.<br /><br />If you can't find a manual here, at iboats, there are other sites that sell them. Failing all else, try your local library.<br /><br />Good luck.
