Recently my 61 johnson 75 sea horse wont go in forward gear. since I have had the motor occasionally it will pop out of gear while going forward. now its gotten much worse and it wont go into forward gear. it goes into reverse with ease.
I disconnected to linkage from the remote shifter and put into forward. this helps but only goes into gear about half the time and most the time is sounds like it is trying to shift but wont go in all the way, aka a grinding noise.

Reading other posts, it sounds like its bad news. something to do with a dog.
I also have a 59 Evinrude 50 parts motor. they are pretty much identical with a a few changes. Can I use parts from this motor to fix the johnson 75.

not sure about the parts interchange but your clutch dog is gone by the sounds of it!i bought a new one for my 1956 30hp johnny at the dealer last year so you should be able to get one also.

Re: johnson sea horse 75 wont go into gear

Lower units (including clutch dog) for 50 and 75hp are different as night and day. As bad as yours sounds it is probably totally worn out---and the forward gear too. Not only that, letting one get that bad is death on the shift linkage parts.

First thing you want to do is remove the diamond shaped plate from the side of the mid section, then the other plate that you will find inside. Behind all that, you will find the shift rod. See if you can move it up and down without moving the gearshift handle. It should have little or no movement. Any significant movement indicates loose parts inside.

If that checks out, it is on to a lower unit rebuild.

307095 clutch dog is listed as NLA (No Longer Available). Can replace with 312054, also NLA.
377870 forward gear is available. List price is $428.00. If the reverse gear is good, you can swap them. But then of course you wont have reverse. And you should replace all the seals while you have it apart. Try www.sea-way.com for NLA parts if you are still interested.

I took off the diamond plate and the plate behind it. There is no up and down movement from the rods behind without moving shifter. Is that a good sign? what does that mean?

What next? do I need to pull apart he bottom shaft and look around? if so what am I looking for?

Thanks

While reading other posts, someone mentioned that if the forward gear is worn out you can switch it with the reverse gear. Of course I would have no reverse, but depending on the price of the parts, having forward is much better then reverse. I can use electric trolling motor for reverse if necessary. Is this true?
