I just bought a johnson sea horse 9.5 and was wondering what year it is and what the gas oil mix is supposed to be.

Model 9R 72M
Serial J3579916

Thanks.

Champion is all I ever will run in my Johnsons. Johnson made there motors to fit champions so in my opinion and experience they work the best and your model shows you should be using champion J-4C plugs

It is great to hear such faithfulness in this day and age. However, the official factory parts list says they recommend Champion J4J (J4C), AC M42K, or Auto Lite A21X spark plugs. I am here to witness that all three came in new motors. Champion is probably easiest to find today. My main contention is that the kid at the parts counter will sell you anything that fits the hole. Not entirely his fault, the Champion plug charts do the same thing. Now they have changed the numbers so you don't know what the heck you are getting.

'72 and 50/1

I just bought one also, but mine has a damaged ID plate on the port side and I cannot make out any of the information - year, model, etc. I am trying to highlight the information, but have not been successful.

What other way can I determine the year of this engine? I need that to identify parts, get the right manual, etc.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Welcome aboard, alkoller. Congrats on your new motor.

One of the forum rules is to start your own thread.
Also, post some pics. Someone can probably help ID that motor. Good luck.

There should be a round disc about the size of a quarter inserted into a recess in the power head, which should contain model and serial numbers.

Please don't reply to posts that violate our rules.

Rule #12, alkoller, asks that you do not do what you just did.

12. Please do not post to threads that have been inactive for more than 3 months UN-LESS you are the original poster. We have very active forums and any thread that remains inactive for that long should be considered "dead". It is especially confusing when there is an entirely new question posted to an old thread. This is considered a hijack. Please start a new thread of your own.

Thanks for your future cooperation. :)
