Howdy,

I picked up a Johnson 15HP Motor, Model #15R76R with a Jon boat I bought today. I'd like to run the boat with just a trolling motor and restore the Johnson motor as much as possible. The motor is in running condition now and has a red steel gas can with a plug in latch for the fuel line.

The over all condition of the motor doesn't seem to be horrible, but it doesn't appear to have been loved on either. The cowling is cracked open and needs repair of the fiberglass and/or replacement. The gasket is pretty chewed up on the cowling as well and I'd like to replace it if it's possible to get one that'll fit this motor.

The paint is pretty chewed up and I'd like to repaint it. It's a pretty close color to the standard GI Joe green most jon boats are painted from the factory, so I'm suspecting finding the paint might not be hard.

While the motor is running, I'd like to do a full tuneup/cleanup/replace hoses/rusty hardware, grease and lube, etc. etc. Just as I would do if I bought a used car and was wanting dependable transportation.

I'd like to find a top notch "general" manual with theory on two cycle outboards so I can learn about the motors. I'd also like to find a "specific" manual for this particular year model motor if that can be done.

Finally, a couple good parts sources would be great.

BTW, I've been an electronic technician for years, my father was a mechanic and I grew up working in his shop. Have experience in the Army working with a variety of mechanicals and electromechanicals, so I'm pretty mechanical inclined and handy. I'm capable of rewiring, replacing wiring bundles, rebuilding carburators, changing water pumps, gear lube, etc.

I'd also like to know of anything and everything I should do to this motor just as a matter of course so I can do as much as I can reasonably do to prevent it conking out on me on the water.

Thank you for your help,

Dave

If you really want to do a good job on the motor, get in touch with the fellow at the following link. He makes a real hard finish paint that will last. Also, I used his primer on my 1976 115 and it is the best that I have found.

http://www.nymarine.ca/

You should not have too much trouble finding a service manual specific to that model, probably find one on Ebay - just enter "1976 15 Service manual" you can save the search and they will email you when something comes up.

The Seloc manuals that they sell here at iboats are not bad for general reference. The first book I bought was a Clymer 2-40HP 1973 to 1990. I read it cover to cover.

The parts manuals are on line but its good to download them to Excel or just print them out:

Scroll to the bottom of the page on this site for a lot of good reading on your motor.

Thank you, I'll do that.

I'll check this out once I'm more familiar with the motor and the names of the parts.
