I have a johnson sea horse. I set the points at 20thds. and new spark plugs to 25thds. I was told to do this by a marine onwer from NY. my motor runs prety good now and I can go in low. I was also told to mix 16-1 or 1/2pt oil to 1 gallon. my problem now is the carb leeks from the priming pump out the top.I have to turn the fuel of when stoped or the fuel keeps leeking. Does anyone know if I can still get a carb kit for this motor, and where can I get a repair book for this motor.(schematics) my motor is a green johnson seahorse TD-20 1947 ceral#573185 thank you.

You can probably get the carb kit and OMC Model Specific Service Manual here: web page
Sounds like you are on the right track. Good luck!

Hi Stephen,
You are likely in need of a good carb cleaning, and possibly a new float for the carb. I have found that with a few modifications, a plastic Mercury float can be retrofitted to the old TD carbs. The Mercury part # is 1395-8983, and the Sierra (Car Quest, NAPA, West Marine, etc.) part # is 18-7208.
- Scott

Hi, Stephen. :)

Your points are good at .020", but you need to open up your Champion J8C (used to be J8J) spark plugs to .030 (hi speed operation) or .040" (low speed operation).

Your fuel mix should be 24:1, 1 quart of TC-W3 outboard oil to 6 gallons 87 octane gas.

Your float in the carb is probably sunk or set too low, or the inlet is not sealing. Scott's suggestion works well for the float.

You can get or order most parts at any Johnson or Evinrude dealer, or at any NAPA Auto Parts store.

Good luck. :)
