Hi all! I have a Johnson seahorse 60hp that I have been working on. Runs incredible now most problems stemmed from corrosion and now it runs like new!

I saw one other post on this but there was no clear answer. The manual for my motor shown in the attached photo says to store the motor in the forward gear. Why is this?

There is no explanation and I have many times accidentally stored in neutral gear with no negative effects. The tension on the control cables seem to be identical no matter the gear.

Seloc....some of the best toliet paper ever printed....put it in the bathroom and get a FACTORY manual. They are referencing the earlier post as prop can freewheel when towed. It does not have to be in forward to store.

Well, what 60hp are we talking about here anyway? If we are talking about a 60hp with Hydro-Electric shift, the manual is correct. The Hydro Electric shift defaults to forward when not running. That is, it will be in forward---that is it should be if it is working properly.

The only thing I can think of is if you trailer the boat and it's in neutral when you're going down the road the prop will be spinning like hell if it's not in gear.

Thanks! Yes I would agree it is probably due to freewheeling in neutral. No it’s the 1982 manual shift not hydroelectric.

Showed it as an '82 in your other post -- made for some confusion. Tip: list yr/hp/model number in your initial posts.

The folks that publish these manuals have made a lot of money.----Content of their books is rarely " proof read " by any mechanics.-----The assumption is made that if it is written down then it must be correct.-----If you are not experienced you can not pick out the errors / mistakes.

Thanks, good to know about the manual it came with the boat and I was not familiar with the background on it.

So your motor is not Hydro-Electric shift. But the page you are reading in the manual is mentioning Hydro-Electric shift. Seems like we may be unfairly condemning the manual? Can't see the whole book from here.
