Hello, I recently bought a 1986 Johnson 90 hp motor. The speedometer is not working so I followed the line and found the cable was sticking out of what i thought to be a strange place. I'm posting a pick if it works. I don't know that much about these thing but there looks to be a small hole below this tube that i'm assuming it should be connected to not sticking out. If i'm right how would i go about fixing this? do i have to take the leg apart?

Thanks

Re: johnson Speedometer

You are correct! That lower unit probably has a passage in it that provides air/water pressure to drive the speedometer. A nice feature. It may have come out about that model year. The hole in the location in the picture may have a plug in it (one option) or it may have a tube-type plastic connector (option 2) that nests in that hole and connects to the engine end of the speedometer hose. The water pressure enters the lower unit on the front (knife edge) of the lower unit about 5" under water. Sometimes the feed hole at the front of the edge of the lower unit plugs up and won't permit the water pressure to feed through the connector (in your picture.)
