johnson starting problem

on my last outing my 48hp johnson began running rough at full throttle then eventually stalled.

After attempting to restart a few times removed cowling and noticed plug lead had come off bottom cylinder. Put back on and attempted to start...no good had to get towed.

Just tried to start it in driveway and it backfired a few times, still didn't start and now i notice black oil coming from thru prop exhaust.

Is there something seriously wrong or should i persist. It's definately getting spark and fuel.

Re: johnson starting problem

Pull the plugs and let it breath for a while, I think TD is right, is is just flooded.
Maybe while it is breathing go to the store and get some new plugs, that never hurts.

I really doubt you hurt anything, just sucked alot of gas into that cylinder and the black goo is just carbon that the raw gas broke up, nothing to worry about.

Re: johnson starting problem

after getting it running again, using the old plugs, because this process does a # on the plugs, do a decarb. this gets that carbon out of the motor so it will run cooler and better.

Decarb, take a can of seafoam put 3/4 of it in the gas tank, with only 1 gallon of premixed gas. put the rest in a spray bottle. start the engine, and let it come up to temperature. then remove plugs, and them some real good shot of seafoam into the cylinders, replace plugs, let sit 15 minutes. restart, and spray the rest of the seafoam into the carbs, so the the motor almost stalls, wait and repeat until the seafoam is gone.then take for a wide open spin. then put in new plugs, ad premixed gas to the tank, and take it for a wide open throttle spin. it is going to smoke like a house on fire, during this process.
