I have a 97 johnson 115 with a system check tach. the engine light is comming on with a 30 second beep. I took it to a mechanic and they found no fuel restriction and said the tach is going bad. I was told on another sight that on the v4 engine the engine light is not hooked up only the v6. Can someone help me out what is the problem thanks?

Re: Johnson tachometer problem?

30sec beep is a low oil level in tank.and no the v4 has no vacuum switch in the fuel line.try disconnecting the wires for the oil tank.flowllow the wires from the tank to under the motor cover.it will be a two wire harness. tan/black and if the engine check stays off then the tank is at falt.if it comes back on then most likely the gauge has failed.

P.S.way did they check the fuel system and not the oil system???

they where aholes they robbed me for $1300 in labor and parts and did not even fix the problem. I dont know why they couldnt figure out the issue I will check the oil tank thanks. I know it is over half full is there something I should be looking for. Why would the engine light come on and not the low oil?

As was stated, the check engine light is the vacuum sensor on a V6. The V4 shouldn't have this alarm. It sounds like a shorted sensor wire in the harness.
