My dad has a '94 175 hp johnson with a temp sending unit and console temperature guage. He says that on the flush unit, the motor always ran near 160F and never below 140F and that last weekend it wouldn't get above 120F. My ?? is what is a normal temp and what might cause the motor not to get to a normal temp? Could tstats stuck open cause this or should we look at the sending unit?

Re: Johnson temperature

It depends on raw water intake temps.
Manifold temps can vary as much as 40F
between Florida summer, and Montana spring-melt temps.
I wouldn't be too concerned with it, unless the impeller hasn't been changed in two or more seasons...Then,I'd replace it just outta general principal

Re: Johnson temperature

Sorry abt the double post..and an answer to your question (sorry).
Yes, a stuck t-stat can cause it to run cooler. Is the T-stat easy to get at on that engine? Try a test run,and see if it runs cooler without the tstat. But do replace it.
They have to be in there to equalize temps so the heads dont warp.A 20minute run wont hurt it at all tho.

------------------
the Early bird get's the worm...So, he don't have to stop for bait.

Be aware that without t-stats in a 60 drgree looper it may not come out of quick-start so be careful when shifting. It may be harder to come out of gear even if the shift interrupter is working properly. Be careful.

Good luck!
