Johnson throttle control problem

I have an older (1980's vintage) Johnson 25hp on my pontoon boat, with Johnson controls attached. Recently, the throttle control stopped working. It appears as though the large cam which pushes open the throttle mechanism has become detached from whatever cable is supposed to operate it. What should I be looking for under the cover? A friend and I did not see any loose cable floating around; is it possible that it could have been drawn back inside the housing out of sight? Boat shifts gears, starts, and can idle forward and backward. Only the throttle opening mechanism appears to be out of whack. All clues or suggestions welcome.

Underblog, not sure which end of the throttle you are talking about. Is it in the remote controls by the helm, or back under the engine cowl? :noidea:

Post a couple pictures would help a lot.

^^Yeah, first step is to isolate the problem by removing the remote throttle cable at the motor. See if the motor throttle mechanism is working normally. If the motor throttle apparatus is OK, problem is the remote cable or box. Make sure the inner cable is moving smoothly in and out -- also check the cable anchor at the motor (point where the adjustment wheel is secured in place).
