Hi, I'm in the process of replacing seals and water pump impellor on my 55 hp Johnson TRL-10, and was wondering if I need to make the big gasket that goes between the upper and lower housing, or can I just use some #2 Permatex Form-a-gasket?
The gasket is no longer available to purchase. It's item # 69 in the
diagram below.

Not sure what good the gasket does anyway, because there's a notch
at the back end of the upper housing, that looks like it would let water
into, and submerge the water pump housing, solenoid, etc.

Also, in the manual, it says the upper vents / louvers in the lower unit housing is where the water "exit's" the engine. I don't see way for
return water to get into this area. Am I missing something? Looks like both copper tubes going to the power head both go into the water pump housing.
Is the return water mixed with the pump intake water?
Thanks for any answers!
