How do you adjust the carbs on a 71 Johnson 125? Model#125ESL710 Ser.# C20333. I bought the boat this year and have so far had few problems with it. Here's some history. The previous owner had a string of never ending problems with this motor. It would run real crappy occasionally at speed and would stall and not restart. The last straw for him was getting stranded in the middle of the lake with his elderly mother-in-law! He sent it to a marina to be diagnosed but they seemed more interested in selling him a new boat than fixing his problem. Anyways, 2 weeks and $500.00 later (new distributor he was told)he gets the boat back in the water and the motor seemed to run fine. Thats where I come in. I took ownership this spring and proceeded to go over everything. Plugs, fuel lines, wiring, everything that I thought could use attention got fixed. It wouldn't crank over (bad solenoid)but we got her started and running. Then came about a month of waiting for the ice to go out so we could drop her in the water. On my first few outings she ran like a top, 44mph @5600 rpm, then occasionally she would lose power and sputter. Backing off on the throttle made it better so after an inspection of the fuel tanks, hoses, lines and primer bulb, (all good) I installed a new fuel pump. Since that time I've burned about 100 gallons of fuel without a glitch except for now. Every now and then it will stall when in gear at an idle. It will restart but you have to coax it a bit with the cold start throttle to keep it running. It seems worse after the engine is warmed up or after a long speed run.
I'd like to start with a basic carb adjustment and would like to find out the proper proceedure to do it. I have a feeling that one of the carbs are intermittently flooding the engine. If anyone is familiar with these carbs I'd love to hear from you. Cheers!

Re: Johnson V4 Carb Adjustment

The carbs are synchonized. One carb will not cause intermitant flooding. A weak ignition system will have a loss of spark which will flood the motor.

I would concentrate on the old electrical system and trouble shoot from there.

Check this link: http://outboardparts.com/troubleshooting/troubleshooting3.htm

As for the old owner being stuck in the middle of the lake with his elderly mother in law maybe he deserved it! :D

Bob

I'm pretty sure that the spark quality is good but I'll check it out tonight with my spark tester. I'd really like to get that carb adjustment proccedure if anyone has it though. Thanks for the reply Bob!
