I'm needing a new stator for my motor '77 Johnson 140 hp with TnT. My parts catalogue calls for a 12 amp stator. I've researched the internet and have only come up with a CDI/Rapair brand. Are these good stators? Anyone know of any other makers of this particular stator? I couldn't even locate an OMC, anyone know if they're available?

You'll never go wrong with CDI parts. Very knowledgeable folks.

Thanks, DHadley. From all the posts I've read, you seem like your the "man" when it comes to V4 crossflows!

Talking about stators - I'm replacing mine because I discovered leakage/melting drops below it. I was stranded in the middle of the lake when I couldn't get it to start, so.. after being towed to shore and when I got it home I inspected it and found a broken wire on the rectifier (right where it enters the rectifier)and then discovered the leaking stator. Did the broken wire on the rectifier cause the stator failure?

Its not unusual for those stators to start dripping from the charge coils. Thats the larger two coils. The smaller ones are where the juice is generated to recharge the battery.

Once, they start dripping, they're not charging sufficiently right? That's what I assumed when I checked the spark at each plug and was getting very weak spark at all so I decided that the stator was faulty. I have heard that the new stators are not as prone to leaking as the original design(the picture of the one from CDI looks different on the outside than my old one - my old one is basically a round ring covered in green plastic looking material, the CDI looks like the windings are a little more exposed) From what I've said, do you think the stator is bad? I've replaced the rectifier.

Yeah I think that was a good move. Yes, a weak charge coil will result in a weak spark. I cant remember ever seeing a CDI unit dripping like the OMC ones did. Doesnt mean they cant -- just means Ive never seen one.

We run the CDI stators on all the race motors where they're legal.

Once again, thanks for all the good info. I take it from the lack of other responses, that CDI is probably my only option. (I was kinda wanting to compare prices, CDI's pretty proud of theirs)

I'm sure that Bombardier still has that stator available. A John/Evin dealer could tell us for sure. Most of the time the CDI stuff is a tad less than the OE stuff. This might be different.

I have a 77 85 hp - it ran great in the lake, then we stopped for lunch - had to be towed home.
just pulled the flywheel after finding no spark anywhere - the stator is cooked - black and the green coating is smeared all around the inside of the flywheel - do you know what the cause of this is? just bought the boat 2 weeks ago.
is this a common problem?
