Hi all. I'm new to this forum and generaly new to owning a boat! Looking for some advice and help with my replacement engine.
I've bought a 1996 vro 140 (non runner) to replace my knackered yamaha v6 150. Took a chance with the engine but believe the seller to be totally genuine!
Engine has had vro system disconnected. Was running (so i'm told) and then stored for over 2 years. I've now fitted it to my Fletcher arrowhawk but have not yet connected up the yamaha wiring to the johnson outboard. At this point i'm just keen to hear the motor run!
Some questions.
1, The automatic choke (red lever) swings 180 degrees and can point into the engine or out away from the engine. I'm assuming that with all the electrics NOT connected, it will be totally useless facing into the engine if trying to start?
2, I've got a temporary fuel tank with tubing and hand pump bubble to pump the fuel. If i connect the fuel and pump the bubble (with red lever into engine) it eventually goes hardish (but never solid). Some fuel leaking from pump which stops immediately bubble pumping stops? pump knackered? If i pump with red lever facing outwards it fills the carbs with fuel and then pours out of the engine from overflow. Is this normal?
3,Stater motor was turning engine slowly with a bit of smoke from the terminals (starter motor hard wired direct to batter terminals). Now it wont turn the engine unless plugs removed? Starter knackerd? Wa thinking about stripping and cleaning, perhaps some new brushes. Waste of time?
4, Last one for now. Should i get the motor running, connecting the black and yellow wire from the harness to earth should stop the engine? Is this correct? Save me gettign a shock from pulling plug leads from running motor.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
Mark
