Re: johnson vro90 short to long conversion

its a 1986 but i have just measured from transom bracket to cavitation plate and its about 20 or 21 inchs would this be a long shaft.

But the transom on the boat is 23 inchs so would i need a longer shaft engine do they make longer than a long shaft ?

thanks

Re: johnson vro90 short to long conversion

Are you measuring vertically or along the flat of the transom? You should be measuring vertically from the plane of the transom top to the plane of the boat bottom. For the motor you should be measuring from the plane of the clamp top (where it meets the transom top) to the plane of the anti-ventilation plate...
Easiest way to make your motor an X-long shaft is to find a blown XL model. Otherwise you'll be hunting around for bits and pieces...

With a decent prop you're going to be fine. Most so called 20" transoms are about 20 3/4" anyway. And then the motor gets raised up a hole or two. If you get a 25" midsection you'll need a jackplate to raise it up high enough.

You're cleared to go boating.

yes measured like you said, and seems engine is still to short, when boat is used it it performs great until you go for top speed or wot, upto 5500rpm its ok but push it to 6500 engine revs out and boat goes no faster.

thanks

Re: johnson vro90 short to long conversion

you are over reving that engine. manual state full throttle operating range 4500-5500 power rated at 5000. don't ***** when it throws a rod at 6500.

as Dhadley said propped right you'll be fine.

Re: johnson vro90 short to long conversion

check you tach setting. It's not likely you're getting to 6500 that easy with stock reeds. Make sure the tach is set on position 6 not 4.
