Johnson VS Chrysler Transom Mounting Holes

I have a 1985 Critchfield Marine 17' Center Console with a 1984 75hp Chrysler Outboard. I am considering repowering with a 1986 90hp Johnson. will there be an issue with the transom bracket bolt holes? what i mean is, will they be the same or do they differ from mfg to mfg? Thanks

to be honest i do not know if Chrysler went with the standard mount configuation or not.

Transom holes will be different. Weight of the johnny will be more, but the higher power will more than offset it. Really no comparison: You will be going from a 3 cylinder 72 cubic inch engine to a 4 cylinder 99 cubic inch engine.

Does that mean the only thing i can replace the motor with is another chrysler? due to the mounting holes not lining up. what do most people do when they encounter this issue and still want to make the swap? thanks

They plug the old holes and drill new ones. How to do that depends on the boat and its construction. It's not that big a deal.

Glad to hear it's ?NOT? a big deal. I haven?t removed the old motor yet, but from what I can tell it looks like the construction consists of the fiberglass exterior, some type of foam in side and then the fiberglass interior of the boat, I am assuming there is some type of reinforcing in the transom but I don't know what it is at this time since the motor has not been removed yet. Someone mentioned using a wooden dowel and something called "Marine Tex" to plug the holes will this method work for me, or is there a better method? Thanks

I was looking at the Marine Tex in my catalog. There are 2 types of Marine Tex that I have found. One is an Epoxy type (looks like you use a caulk gun) and the other is a putty like form. Which should I use for this application? Thanks
