In general, how hard is it to change a water pump? I have a 100 hp johnson (older motor, like a 79') that I'm pretty sure needs a new water pump. To save money I was thinking about trying to replace it myself, but want to know what I'm getting into. Thanks.

Re: Johnson water pump

not terribly difficult with the kit, the hardest part is usually dropping the lower unit. this is due to disconnecting the shift linkage under the powerhead and hoping the bolts on the lower don't give you problems. many articles and posts on it, and i would recommend buying a manual if you plan to do any work on the motor. good luck!

Re: Johnson water pump

In general, not hard.

Basic Steps:
-Disconnect the top of the shift rod from the linkage.
-Tilt the motor way up.
-Remove the Prop
-Remove the adjustable Trim Tab (mark across the Tab/Lwr unit surfaces so you can line it upon reinstallation).
-Remove the bolts that hold on the lower unit (there's a bolt up inside where the trim tab goes).
-Slide the lower out. Careful not to twist or bind the drive shaft/shift rod.
-Get a BRP Water Pump kit. The kit will have detailed instructions on how to rebuild the waterpump.
-When sliding the lower unit back in place, pay close attention to the exhaust housing segment seating and make sure the water tube aligns with the water pump. May have to wiggle it a little so the drive shaft splines go into the engine. It helps to have a second person during this part.
- Bolt up the lower unit, Reinstall the Trim Tab, prop, lower the engine and reconnect the top of shift rod.
- Crank up the engine, on the water muffs, and check for normal water flow.
