The system is fine and reliable, if maintained.

It saves the hassle of mixing oil/fuel. It also prevents the "forgot" factor.

You will hear/see a lot of naysayers on the oil injection system. 90% of those have no idea what they are talking about.

Re: Johnson with vro

Just look at the tank and lines.

What kind of shape are they in?

I believe the earliest was in the late 80's. Not sue of year.

There were two systems. The latter systems had four wires.

The most important thing is you setting it up and maintaining it in your boat.

If it really bugs you, you can disconnect everything and pre-mix. The oil injection pump will work just fine pumping pre mioxed fuel.

The 1990 would be oil injected too.

I would look at the general condition of both, especially compression. The few years between them won't make that much difference.

However, 10 HP is 10 HP.

Yea i know my boat is rated for 50hp. So i guess max it out if they are the same compression wise

I would if the 50 looks good, condition wise.

I'd go for the 1990 50hp evinrude if its in good shape. Great motors and it's the rated max for your boat.

Re: Johnson with vro

So i shouldnt worry about the hp? Just get the best compression

You want the motor that is in the best shape. Look for compression readings above 100psi and within 10psi on each cylinder. Remove the cowling and look at the condition of the electrical components; are the wire connections corroded? Does it look like there has been salt water exposure? etc.

Also check the leg, trim and tilt, prop and skeg for damage and wear.

If both motors are in equal condition, the 50hp would be your best choice. It's newer, got 10 more HP and has VRO2 which is a lot better than the original VRO oil system.

Also you need to figure in price. If one is much more expensive than the other you need to consider that too. Do they both come with the controls and cables? Fuel tank and fuel line? All these things add value to the purchase price.

Re: Johnson with vro

I bought a 40 that had the vro disconnected and plugged. That was done to
prevent a mishap if the vro was to fail, as the seller "had heard" of failures.

My only actual experience with this was when I came upon a boat with a 40hp
that had the engine just "froze" on it. He had vro on it, and I towed him.
Still don't know what came out of that.

I feel confident when I put oil into the fuel, and it is not that big a deal for me.

Good luck!
:)
