Hello, been gone for awhile. My old arm got tired of yankin' the rope on my 66yr old 'Rude which is only 7 yrs younger than me. So I sprung for a new 9.9 HP Merc. Got it mounted on my 12' Livingston and took it out for a breakin period. Of course I got the electric start model else I would have stuck with Ole. It's really smooth and so quiet compared to the Rude. I think I'm gonna like this new fishing partner!!

A rope start compared to an electric start one it's a day/night boating difference. Wich Rude model was the previous one in use.?

It's a 1954 15HP Fastwin. Still a good one, I just figure 18 yrs of pulling that rope had earned me this one.

Took it out yesterday for some trolling and sometimes when I brought it back to idle it would die. Put it in the test tank and set the idle up 1/4 turn of adj screw. Also had to up the choke idle RPM a little as it wasn't enough to keep it running in either position. I live at 5700' altitude and I attribute having to make these adjustments to this. It seems to run well at all RPMs so am I correct to guess it doesn't need to be rejetted?

Motors factory delivered are usually adjusted at sea level so probably at higher altitude will require some carb adjustments to idle properly. Will this motor work at high altitude and at sea level as well ? For a portable motor to work much better at a higher altitude will need to swap carb jets for smaller orifice ones along a prop maximization towards a less prop pitch from factory delivered one if wanting to count with the max HP out of that motor. There are several carb-jets kits for high altitude usage and less OEM prop pitches to play with..

Thanks, sea rider, as I said this is on a 12' Livingston so I'll never need max RPM with it pushing a displacement hull. I got this up on a plane once with the 15HP 'Rude and the sides of the hull looked scary with all the moving ripples in it.
