Ok so I have this little 12 foot jon boat. I really like how small it is but would like to maybe add some type of extra flotation like maybe some small pontoons. Replacing this boat is not an option. I?m looking for a family boat now, but this little 12 footer is for father son fishing, and other small boat tasks. I was thinking about maybe adding some of those pontoons off one of those one man fly fishing rigs. What do you all think.

Are you trying to add capacity or stability? Not sure what the goal is. I would say bad idea if the end goal is capacity. If stability is the issue, then mounting them along the gunwales could help side to side rocking. I think you need to describe a little more about what you are thinking..

I'm looking more for stability, do you think it would help much. I was thinking even mabe make some small out riggers.

Judging by the amount of money you would spend buying this stuff, and in the end you would have a rig of questionable value, you would be better off selling what you have and putting that money toward a 14, 15, or 16 foot aluminum fishing boat. Check your local grocery store bulletin boards and place your ad there. There are usually a bunch of boats for sale on those boards. Who knows -- you might be able to trade with someone.

Here are the supplies you would need. I hope it doesn't break the bank.
1 - 6 ft 2" x 2"
2 - 1 ft 2" x 2"
4 - 3 1/2" screws.
1 roll of duct tape.
4 or 6 - 2 liter coke bottles.

Using the screws, attach two short boards to the Long boards at the end to make an upside down U.

Now, duct tape the outrigger to the jonboat, with the short bars hanging down. Duct tape bottles to downriggers. Go fishing.
Now, for product analysis.
Problem situation #1. Still unstable. Solution: more bottles and duct tape.
Problem situation #2. No more bottle space. Solution: 2nd downrigger on each side doubles bottle capacity.
Problem situation #3. No bottles. I don't know. Drink another can of coke while you ponder solution.

Outriggers on a fishing boat would be a real pain when your reeling in a fish.
Unless they were only maybe 18" from the side of boat?

We don't use no stinking fishing poles, all we use is dynamite and a net.:D

There are some canoes that do what think you are thinking of.. they have foam sponsons attached to the sides for stability. These sponsons will prevent the canoe from tipping once the foam hits the water. Here is a link to a canoe with this type of sponson..

Re: jon boat made to pontoon boat

There is a guy on a bass forum that I frequent who uses a canoe, and has I think 18 inch outriggers with a foam cylinder on each. The outriggers are made of extruded aluminum, and storebought. I am sure you could find something storebought for yours if you don't like my bit of southern ingenuity.:D
