When I was a young whipper snapper, I and some friends from the local burger flipping establishment decided to take my very heavy 12 foot fiberglass Johnny Boat fishing. We put a 5 HP on it and put 4 of us in that poor lil thing. We were sitting at the dock, all of our tackle boxes, rods, food, coolers and what not. Lake was very calm as it was just before dawn. We were all set and I opened the throttle wide open and instantly the bow planes underwater and away we went. Straight down. The water was only two feet deep, so here we sit... submerged on the bottom, looking like the idiots we were. We all stood up and walked up the steps to the dock and went back to bed. After we changed clothes of course. We never spoke of this event again.

Re: Jon boat submarine

Last year, older boat. New 50 hp. Merc. Let my wife out with son. Last thing told her was make sure once she got out of the bay to lower the motor using the trim and tilt all the way down(older boat with specs. of max. 55hp at head, not prop)
You guessed it. My son came in and said "Mom tried to kill us". Didn't put motor all the way down and the bow almost tried to meet the transom. Luckily she remembered at the last moment to throttle back.
No submarine but close. Would of loved to see your escapade.

Re: Jon boat submarine

Sort of reminds me of a camping trip to Sebastian Inlet a couple of months ago. My buddy and I have our boats tied up right behind our campsite. The neighbors next door were just a little unruly and very pushy. The husband goes to work during the day while the family camps. Mom decides she wants to take dads boat out. She fires up the outboard with the engine in the full up position. Motor just idling away in the air. She waits patiently while her son unties the boat and holds the bow while lil sister get in. All the while the engine is running out of water. I just stood there and smugly smiled as I had visions of her husband wondering what in the world happened to his nice new outboard when he got back. They shoved off from the bank and still had the engine up. Not until they were well out into the canal did she begin to trim the engine down. That impeller must have been fried! I felt sort of guilty for not barging in, but she had just a tad of an attitude about everything and I decided to give them a wide berth. Later I felt very smug about it as their behavior got so bad my buddy almost ran them off. People.
