I came across a 40hp big twin with a winged gearcase. I Iooked it up and the parts breakdown shows it being called an
"A" suffix gear case. Any info on this design would be great. Also does it use standard gears? Thanks for any help.

I have an evinrude like that. I far as I know they are the same on the inside. I have heard that those wings are some kind of helper to get up on plane faster. And also I heard it is some sort of prop guard. Others will chime in to give there opinion. Mine is a tiller model and it is quite hard to steer.

We got LOTS of complaints about them CATCHING weeds here in the swamps. Lots of them got cut and ground off because of that.

It's a planing aid. Also known as wishful thinking.

All the same for the inside bits.----Also featured those wings on some 25 HP models.-----Prop guard / weed guard or what you like to call it.----I do know they steer different , as in very responsive !
