I'm working on a 1976 85 hp Evinrude. Both water tube guides are missing part numbers 0314765 — GUIDE,WATER TUBE LONG and 0314081 — GUIDE,WATER TUBE SHORT. Part number 78 and 91 top left of the picture. They are on top of the water pump housing. It has been a couple years since I had one of these apart. The copper tubes that hook to the waterpump are the same length. Should they be? Why is one of the guides long and one short? What can be used if the guides missing? Thanks for any help.

One is only slightly longer than the other one. Reason: So you can start the water tube in the longer one first, then the other one. So you don't have to hit them both at the same time.

OK having said that, are you sure they are missing? They almost always shinny up the water tube. Look and see if they are up in there. If so, simply pull them off.

Finally, yes the copper tubes are the same length.

And I agree with post # 3----They are likely up there on the tubes.----Seen it many times.

Thanks for the replies. The first thing that I did was to look and see if they were up there. Not there at all. Makes sense to have one a little longer to start. I can't find the longer one but a bunch of the shorter ones. May have to make 2 short ones work unless someone has a better solution. I found the short ones new for about 10usd each. Thanks again.
