Found this laying in the bottom of the leg when I took the powerhead off.
Can someone tell me what it is before I reinstall the powerhead?

Is that wood it's attached to? Looks like an wood anchor insert.

It does not appear to be any outboard motor part, at least that could have fallen out from above. Maybe someone was having fun when they reassembled this last time & are laughing now.

What's on the reverse side of the metal anchor thingy? You can see the little tabs on the anchor that bite into the wood so it doesn't spin when you screw a bolt into it.

People are assuming it is a "tee nut", but I don't think so. However, I don't know what it is. Here is a tee nut:

There's obviously wood grain in the pic...what else could it possibly be?

I don't know what it is either but it looks like some kind of retainer that would hold a spring in place. My only experience is with old outboards... usually 30 or more years old... so if it's a late model I don't have a clue what new things they may have in the newer models.

It kind of looks like the medallion that has the model number stamped on it.

Never seen it myself either. Throw it away and put the mtr back together.

Looks like the thingy inside the spring in the wheel cylinder of a 1938 Packard... LOL

If it were me, I'd look for a picture of a parts explosion of that motor and look for anything above the leg. It doesn't appear to be anything from the engine but I'd want to know for sure.

No it's not mounted on any wood. In the one pic it is sitting on the counter in my shop. In the other pic it is inside the leg as I found it.
It is stainless (not magnetic) and perfectly flat, not a tee nut. There is no part number or anything stamped on it.
I'm thinking it's a practical joke or maybe it just fell in when the last guy was servicing it.
Strange.

From the size of it, it looks to have been blocking the biggest of the round holes, just where it is lying. Might have been part of an 'exhaust tuning' system. From time to time some funny parts are made with intention of later implementations. May never be implemented, but if parts are 'usable' in running production with minor modification, they are just passed on.
