Hey there, just got my third boat. First one is a 13.5 ft Western Red Cedar Canoe, 2nd is a 12 ft alum rowboat that is in process to be a Duck Hunting Boat (Had to fill a hole from a 2x6, then painted the inside with 3 coats of Herculiner truck bed liner. Need to finish the outside yet and add a blind.)

This new project was a gift from a friend. I have no information on any of it, but anything anyone could add would be fantastic! Here's a couple of pics to help...

Re: jtpickel's project

Just checking in after our PM conversation. Pics looks good. You sure were dead on about having a "similar boat in similar condition" to what I started with. It looks like it's the same model as mine. Is yours a 16'? If it is, I'm concerned that you may be overpowered. Mine is max rated at 85. I have an 85 on it and I think it sits pretty stern heavy in the water. Don't know how the Merc towers compare to johnnyrude V4s weight wise. I'm sure it will haul ***** though!! Looks like your side pieces are it much better shape then mine were. Mine were so rotted it was difficult just using them as templates for new pieces.

Yeah, it may be a bit on the overpowered side. I wouldn't mind trading down to a 75 horse. I think it is also rated at an 85 horse max. We'll see when we get it out on the water! My buddy says it is ok, so I will try it out. Will post more pics in mid-April when the work begins!

Sounds good. I have hear people on here say that the Johnson/Evinrude 75 (or 70, whatever) 3 cylinder is one of the best power-to-weight ratio outboard available. That would seem to be key on boats like ours. Not that I wouldn't at least try it with the 100 :)

Update!!!

The '68 Starcraft is home in the garage and being worked on. After getting in to it, it did need some work. Especially seats! Here are some pics for y'all to see it!

I noticed the smell of rotting wood, so I started checking. Yup, most of it is rotted. Good news though! Only a small portion on the port upper portion of the transopm is starting to rot, so don't need to replace that yet.

The dash, sides, and rear are getting replaced. I am looking for seats right now to know the color of the vinyl to use. The wiring is going well, and will be finished in about two weeks. I am going away for a while, so small amounts of time is all I have left!

More pics to come!

Looking forward to the pics. If you have the motor off for any reason I would go ahead and do the transom while you were at it. It's not that big a deal on these boats.

Re: jtpickel's project

OK, so ran in to my first snag. Decided to wait on the transom and paint until winter. Problem that I ran in to is when my mechanic (father in law) started the motor, it would only run for a few minutes, then shut down. He said he thinks the problem is too much air/not enough fuel getting to the cylinders. He thinks that there is a leak/ bad connection on the bayonet fitting on the motor side. Help!!!

You can see the motor on the pics above... It is a Merc 1000, 100 hp straight six...

EZ and JT I would almost bet that boat is a Jupiter V not a holiday you can see the differance at the dashboard on the sides. The Holidays had the trim from the sides wrap around the top of the dash the Jupiters didnt and Jt's doesnt just like my 1970 Jupiter V.looks like a sweet ride and I will take a term from another board I belong to . You got that for free ( you suck ) :D.

jt, post your motor questions in the mercury repair section. There's a number of engine gurus in there and they don't venture into the resto forum much.

EZ I stand corrected I just read in another post that your boat is also a Jupiter . That makes me wonder when they switched the dash on them as on mine the side trim doesnt wrap around the dash like JT's and unlike yours which does just like the Holidays.
